If you missed our coffee chat this week, Christina and I chatted about “The SH*T Inside Our Head” and how to focus on getting past the negative stuff and move on.
If you missed it, go check it out here!
We all fail!! That is part of life and it shows that we are at least trying…
TRYING to get better.
TRYING new things.
TRYING to focus.
TRYING to eat better.
TRYING to move more.
TRYING to think positively
BUT the truth is, you will never be PERFECT! Nor will anyone else. So why do we try to be perfect?
Failing is PART of our world so planning on how to deal with failure is key. How to cope with failure in a healthy way takes some of the fear out of failing—and it might reduce the pain so you can bounce back better than before.
Here are 5 healthy ways to cope with failure:
- Embrace Your Emotions. When we fail, maybe you didn’t get that promotion, you ate the ‘wrong’ foods’, you gained weight or fell back into old habits, it NEVER feels good. Failure is accompanied by a variety of emotions; embarrassment, anxiety, anger, sadness, and shame to name a few. Those feelings are uncomfortable and many people will do anything they can to escape feeling emotional discomfort. BUT taking the time to feel the emotions and then release them, gives you the opportunity to not only learn from the failure but to get past it.
- Recognize Unhealthy Attempts to Reduce Pain. You might be tempted to say, “I didn’t actually want that job anyway,” or “I am not really going to be able to reach my goals anyway” but minimizing your pain won’t make it go away. Using food, alcohol or drugs is a common way to attempt to remove the pain but that is not a good coping skill either. Recognize it. Knowledge is power.
- Practice Healthy Coping Skills. Calling a friend, practicing deep breathing, taking a workout class, taking a bubble bath, going for a walk, or playing with your pet are just a few examples of healthy coping skills. Create a list for you to try and use. Not all of that list will work but you will continue to learn what DOES work.
- You are NOT Helpless or Hopeless. No matter how many times you have tried and tried again, you are not a lost cause. When you find yourself thinking that there no use in trying again, reframe your thoughts. Remind yourself of more realistic thoughts about failure such as:
- I will use this to learn, improve, better myself, and grow stronger
- I am strong enough to learn from this failure
- Failure is a sign that I’m challenging myself to do something difficult
- Ask yourself what you can learn. You can always learn something. IF you had a birthday cake and a ton of snacks at the birthday party because you were starving when you went, you learned that you need to go to a party already have eaten and with an attack plan.
Every time you have the dreaded feeling of failure, look back at these 5 healthy ways to deal with the failure AND make a plan to move forward. You can have so many hiccups, trip-ups, falls BUT as long as you get back up, that is the MOST IMPORTANT part.
